Recently, many natural substances have been increasingly found to have significant biological properties which make them useful in the treatment of various diseases. Nature has plenty of healing properties which makes it invaluable for its role towards promotion of a healthy world. Turmeric (Curcuma longa), one of the frequently used spices in Indian cooking, is renowned for its medicinal properties from time immemorial. It is well known to possess anti inflammatory, anti oxidant, antiseptic and anti cancer properties with an excellent safety profile. The active principles of this spice are curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. From preclinical studies to clinical trials, tremendous progress has been made with respect to this compound in the medical field .This review will focus on the effects of curcumin and its mechanisms of action in various disease conditions.
